Set of four napkins, each finished with edge trim along the warp and visible selvedges. Dimensions reflect the width of traditional Kasuri (ikat) looms, which are characteristically narrow, allowing the weaver to control tension for a supple texture.

Made in Shippo Red, a double Kasuri — the most intricate Kasuri technique, this fabric involves multiple resist-dye processes to create its distinctive pattern. The interlocking circles form a flower-like pattern symbolizing harmony and enduring relationships; an ancient Indian motif that was introduced to Japan along with Buddhism.

The fabrics are woven in a 75-year-old, family-run mill in Yame, Japan, using preserved Kasuri techniques and salvaged Toyota power looms — relics of the Industrial Revolution. The looms are semi-automated and characteristically narrow, allowing the weaver to control tension and ensure that the pre-dyed yarn aligns so that the intended pattern appears. Once a nationwide-practiced craft used for kimono-making, Kasuri declined after the post-war shift toward western fashion and synthetic textiles, leaving only a few remaining mills in Yame, whom today are acknowledged as preservers of culture in Japan.
