Variation of the classic Amish Nine-Patch-Four-Patch quilt layout. Finished with a quilt binding, hand ties and raw wool batting from Kutch, India.
Made in pieced-together Khadi - a cotton that is grown, hand-spun and hand-woven into cloth in India. The varying indigo shades are created through a traditional vat fermentation process using the indigofera tinctoria plant - long valued for its antiseptic qualities, as well as clay and seeds.
The processes of Khadi are carried out by rural artisans - small and marginal farmers, spinners, ginners and weavers - working within larger craft networks across India. Guided by Mahatma Gandhi’s philosophy of “Swaraj,” or self-government, they work collectively towards sustaining rural livelihoods and preserving indigenous craft traditions and raw materials. The same philosophy informs new initiatives for use of indigenous wool sourced from pastoral communities, where locally available fibres - often otherwise discarded - are brought back into circulation.
