Apron skirt featuring a fixed belt to tie around waist. With inspiration from the traditional Japanese apron, Maekake.

Made in Purple Checks, a classic Japanese Gingham motif, and Indigo Glint for contrast. The Indigo Glint fabric, in signature kasuri colours, is naturally dyed using the Indigofera tinctoria plant — a pea plant traditionally used to dye work garments, with properties believed to enhance the fabric’s durability and also ward off insects. The making of kasuri fabrics involve more than thirty intricate processes, with specialized craftspeople responsible for each stage. Because the process is so intricate, the fabric was historically reserved for the few — once woven for nobility, gifted to brides, and offered to the gods.

The fabrics are woven in a 77-year-old, family-run mill in Yame, Japan, using preserved techniques and salvaged Toyota power looms — relics of the Industrial Revolution. The looms are semi-automated and characteristically narrow, allowing the weaver to control tension and ensure that the pre-dyed yarn aligns so that the intended pattern appears. Once a nationwide-practiced craft used for kimono-making, kasuri declined after the post-war shift toward western fashion and synthetic textiles, leaving only a few remaining mills in Yame.
